Dear Mr. Cannon:
A Nobel Peace Laureate and Honourary Canadian Citizen, Aung San Suu Kyi has stood for the rights and freedoms of the Burmese people under the rule of its ruthless military junta.
The unjustified trial and continued detention of Burmese democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi serves as a stark reminder of the need for workable stronger action by all governments to protect and promote democracy, human rights and freedom of expression for the people of Burma.
I call on you and the Government of Canada to actively work more with the international community in particularly United States, ASEAN, China and India to press for her immediate release from the notorious Insein Prison. Aung San Suu Kyi is one of us.
Should the junta fails to release Honourary Canadian Citizen Aung San Suu Kyi, I urge the Government of Canada to request the establishment of a commission of inquiry into crimes against humanity and war crimes committed by Senior General Than Shwe and Burmese junta with a potential indictment by the International Criminal Court in relation to the Burmese junta’s appalling human rights records, and military campaign of ethnic cleansing that the ruling State Peace and Development Council is carrying out against its own citizens for decades.
Yours truly,
