Burma protester climbs Lloyd's

Lloyd's staff shocked as campainger climbs building to hang banner
Burma protestor Mike Robertson shocked Lloyd’s staff after climbing the London
headquarters building today.

Robertson put up a five metre banner urging Lloyd’s underwriters to stop financial dealings
with Burma. Robertson was later arrested by police.

His protest was timed to coincide with the eve of the birthday of Burma’s elected Prime
Minister, Aung San Suu Kyi.
Suu Kyi’s 64th birthday falls on Friday 19 June; she’s now been detained under house
arrest in Burma for the majority of the last 19 years.
Robertson scaled the Eiffel Tower in November 2007 to draw attention to the campaign.

U.S. Campaign for Burma

Dear All,

Today, Aung San Suu Kyi turns 64 years old. She will spend this birthday in Insein prison, as a prisoner of Than Shwe's military regime -- simply because she has called for democracy and human rights for the people of Burma.

We and our colleagues throughout the world have been doing a ton of work to make sure that she remains in the spotlight. Over 560 people signed up to host events in their homes through our "Arrest Yourself" campaign!

If you were not able to host an event, we are asking you to make a special donation of $64, $640 or $6,400 today to the U.S. Campaign for Burma in honor of Aung San Suu Kyi, so that we can continue our work to advocate for her freedom, and human rights for everyone in Burma.

Your money will be put to good use. Here are only a few things we have organized lately:
This year, through our annual "Arrest Yourself" campaign, over 560 people in every state and 46 countries around the world have pledged to put themselves under self-imposed "house arrest" and to host educational events in solidarity with Aung San Suu Kyi.
On Moday, U.S. Campaign for Burma Executive Director Aung Din joined other prominent democracy advocates from Burma to personally deliver a petition of over 680,000 signatures calling for the release of all political prisoners, including Aung San Suu Kyi, to Ibrahim Gambari, the UN Secretary-General's special envoy to Buurma at UN headquarters in New York.
We helped recruit 112 former Presidents and Prime Ministers from throughout the world to urge the UN Secretary General to travel to Burma to seek Suu Kyi's release. While he initially resisted, in early May he changed his mind and said he will go in the near future.
We are currently campaigning for the renewal of the Burmese Freedom and Democracy Act, which includes targeted sanctions on Burma's ruthless leaders that Aung San Suu Kyi has called for. We hope you will join this effort and take a moment to call your Senators.
Our work has been covered in thousands of news articles, helping to keep Burma on the agenda of world leaders
You can read more about what else we've done lately here and, at the bottom of this email you can read about some of the events taking place around the world to honor Aung San Suu Kyi.

Please help us to continue our vital work by making a contribution to our campaign today.

Sincerely,

Jeremy Woodrum
Director
U.S. Campaign for Burma

Parlimentary Friends Of Burma's Press Release/Communiqué: Aung San Suu Kyi’s 64th Birthday spent at Insein Prison အေမ့ေမြးေန႕၆၄‏‏

Jun 17, 2009

Aung San Suu Kyi may be alone in jail on her 64th birthday on June 19, but the hope and freedom she represents will be very much present in Canada at two planned vigils to show solidarity with the Burmese democracy leader.

Candlelight vigils will be held in Ottawa and Toronto to mark the birthday of the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize winner and leader of the National League for Democracy political party in Burma.

The Canadian events will be among a host of similar celebrations and other activities around the world honouring Suu Kyi and calling for her release.

Since winning a landslide election victory in 1990, Suu Kyi has spent more than 13 of the past 19 years under some form of detention.

She was charged with violating the restriction order under which she was detained after allowing a man who swam uninvited to her lakeside home to stay at her home for two nights in early May.

American John William Yettaw, 53, allegedly swam across Inya Lake to Suu Kyi’s home despite the property and surrounding area being under tight security at all times. He reportedly had wanted to interview Suu Kyi for a book he was writing.

Some observers believe the junta and security personnel were involved in the incident, which occurred shortly before the famous political prisoner was due to be freed following her last six-year term of house arrest, and prior to the junta’s proposed general elections in 2010.

If she is found guilty, Suu Kyi could face up to five years’ imprisonment.

Supporters at the vigils will also recognize the plight of 6,000 Karen refugees who were forced to flee their homes in early June and have been under brutal attack by the Burmese military junta.

“The situation in Burma is very grave at this point,” said Canadian Friends of Burma executive director Tin Maung Htoo in a news release.

“There are a huge number of political prisoners languishing in horrible conditions. As I speak there are many Karen refugees being killed in brutal military raids in Eastern Burma. In Chin state many are still suffering from a famine and in the Cyclone Nargis-affected Irrawaddy delta area thousands are still homeless.”

According to the Thailand-based Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (Burma), there are 2,155 political prisoners in Burma as of June 6.

Among them, more than 350 have received harsh sentences of decades in prison since October 2008. The longest term has been 104 years handed down to a student activist in January this year.

On June 16 a delegation of former Burmese political prisoners and human rights activists delivered a petition to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in New York calling on him to press for the release of all political prisoners in Burma on his upcoming visit to that country.

The global petition was signed by over 660,000 people worldwide, including over 32,000 Canadians.

In another international campaign, more than 100 former political prisoners worldwide have signed a statement calling on the United Nations Security Council to press Burmese authorities to free all political prisoners and to impose a global arms embargo on Burma.

The “64 words to Aung San Suu Kyi” campaign was launched to mark the Burmese democracy icon’s 64th birthday.

Organizers of the campaign include Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, US Campaign for Burma, English Pen, Swedish Burma Committee, International Peace Bureau, and others.

“I believe democracy will eventually be restored in Burma, as long as the Burmese people continue their struggle against the military regime, and as long as the international community supports their efforts,” wrote Kim Dae-Jung, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and former President of South Korea from 1997 to 2003.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown wrote, “We must do all we can to make this Birthday the last you spend without your freedom.”

“All of Burma is suffering because of the brutality and incompetence of Burma’s generals,” said Tin Maung Htoo.

The Ottawa vigil will take place at the Human Rights Monument, near the Ottawa Court House at 161 Elgin St., at 8 p.m. on Friday, June 19. The Toronto vigil will be held at Dundas Square, at Yonge and Dundas, at 6:30 p.m. the same evening.

Press Release

For immediate release - Tuesday 16 June 2009

Burma activists deliver political prisoner petition to Ban Ki-moon:
"Political prisoners are the hope for democracy in Burma. Their lives are at stake."

A delegation of former political prisoners and human rights activists from Burma have formally delivered a petition to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, calling on him to make it his personal priority to secure the release of all Burma's political prisoners. Almost 680,000 signatures were collected in just ten weeks in the largest global coordinated action for Burma yet.

The delegation included Tate Naing, former political prisoner and Secretary of the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (Burma); Khin Ohmar, Foreign Affairs Secretary of the Forum for Democracy in Burma; and Nyi Nyi Aung, whose mother and two cousins are serving jail terms of up to 65 years for their pro-democracy activities.

Nyi Nyi Aung said, "I am grateful to have had the opportunity to deliver this petition to the UN. I truly believe every signature counts. To Mr. Ban Ki-moon, my message is simple: Your words show you take this issue seriously. But now I want to see what action you will take to secure the release of my family and all Burma's political prisoners."

There are currently more than 2,100 political prisoners in Burma's prisons and labour camps. Last month, National League for Democracy member Salai Hla Moe became the 140th political prisoner to die in detention since 1988. His family were only informed of his death on a routine prison visit, almost three weeks after his death. The 48 year-old activist leaves behind a wife and four children.

Tate Naing said, "How many more political prisoners have to die before the UN will act? I urge Mr. Ban Ki-moon to accept nothing less than the immediate and unconditional release of all Burma's political prisoners in his current negotiations with the regime. He must not allow any more delay. Political prisoners, including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, are the hope for democracy and future leaders of our country. Their lives are at stake."

• 677,254 people from 220 different countries and territories have signed the petition.
• One person has signed the petition every 10 seconds since the campaign launched on 13 March 2009, Burma's Human Rights Day.
• In Thai-Burma border areas, over 60 roundtable discussions about political prisoners have taken place, for migrant workers and in refugee camps.

• Over 23,000 signatures were collected from refugee camps on the Thai-Burma border.
• Over 47,000 signatures were collected from migrant workers in Southern Thailand.
• Over 23,000 signatures were collected in the Thai-Burma border town of Mae Sot.

The campaign is led by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (Burma) and Forum for Democracy in Burma. Click on this link for a full list of all endorsing organisations involved in the campaign: http://www.fbppn.net/?page_id=1750

4. Nyi Nyi Aung's Family

• His mother, 60 year-old Daw Sann Sann Tin is serving a 9-year jail term in Meikhtila prison in Mandalay division.
• His cousin, 32 year-old Thet Thet Aung, is serving a 65-year sentence in Myingyan prison in Mandalay division. Her husband Chit Ko Lin is serving an 11-year sentence in Pakkoku prison, Magwe division. They are both members of the 88 Generation Students group led by Min Ko Naing. They have three young children who are currently being cared for Nyi Nyi Aung's aunt.
• His cousin, 21 year-old Nwe Hnin Yee aka Noe Noe is a student activist serving an 11-year jail term in Ma-ubin prison in Irrawaddy division.

5. Political Prisoner Statistics

• There are currently 2,155 political prisoners in Burma.
• Since October last year, more than 350 of them have been sentenced to harsh sentences of up to 104 years in prison.
• Since November last year, more than 230 political prisoners have been transferred to jails all around the country, far from their families. This makes it hard for their families to visit, due to the distances and costs involved. It also means it is very difficult for families to provide their loved ones with essential food and medicines. For more information about the health impact of prison transfers, please read this report Burma's prisons and labour camps: silent killing fields by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (Burma) http://www.aappb.org

Dear All,

We need the help of all our supporters who live in the United States -- can you call your Congressional office?

Here's the situation: over the weekend, Burma's military regime began bombing (with shells/mortar rounds) villages of the ethnic Karen people in eastern Burma. Thousands of refugees are streaming out of the area, over the Moei river and into Thailand.

We received some photos of people fleeing and released them to the media. Indiscriminately targeting peoples' homes and lives is a crime against humanity and war crime, illegal under international law.

Over recent years, Burma's regime has decimated over 3,300 villages and forced at least 1.5 million people to flee their homes. Regime troops destroy food supplies, hospitals/clinics, schools, and even cooking pots.

Yet, the UN Security Council has not acted to stop these attacks, even though they investigated and took action in similar situations in Yugoslavia (former), Rwanda, and Darfur.

Right now, two leading members of Congress, Joe Crowley (D-NY) and Don Manzullo (R-IL), are organizing a letter to President Obama that urges him to take action to stop these attacks once and for all, and bring the perpetrators -- the Burmese regime -- to justice.

Can you help us by calling your your Congressional office in Washington, DC to ask if your Congressperson will sign the letter? All the instructions you need are right here.

President Barack Obama
The White House

Washington, DC 20500

Dear President Obama,

Successive U.S. administrations, with overwhelming bi-partisan support from Congress, have shown their support for Burmese peoples’ aspiration to live in a democratic society free from their military dictatorship. Unfortunately, despite U.S. efforts as well as decades of peaceful attempts by successive United Nations Special Envoys and Rapporteurs to convince the Burmese military regime to end its atrocities and seek a peaceful transition to democracy, peace, democracy and stability elude Burma.

Therefore, we urge you to take the lead in establishing a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Commission of Inquiry into the Burmese military regime’s crimes against humanity and war crimes against its civilian population. Similar cases in Rwanda, Yugoslavia, and Darfur have all led to Commissions of Inquiry and each previous case had UN Special Envoys and Special Rapporteurs assigned to seeking peaceful solutions to their respective countries international humanitarian crises. Still though, the UNSC took the necessary step and established a Commission of Inquiry to investigate and provide justice and accountability for the war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide committed with impunity by state agents. By elevating the cause of Burma to the UNSC, the United States is putting Burma’s supporters on notice that we will not support the status quo while millions of people languish.

The United Nations has passed over 30 resolutions acknowledging and decrying the Burmese military regime’s crimes and blatant system of impunity. All the while, Burma’s military regime has carried out a scorched-earth campaign against the country’s ethnic minority civilian population, destroying over 3,300 villages, using systematic rape as a weapon of war, pressing the Burmese people into modern-day slave labor, killing innocent civilians, and forcing at least one million people to flee their homes as refugees and internally displaced. The regime has also conscripted tens of thousands of child soldiers, and imprisoned and tortured those who dare speak out in support of freedom and democracy.

Compounding the brutality of the regime’s war crimes and crimes against humanity is their flagrant system of impunity, in which perpetrators go free, but victims fear retribution if they seek accountability and justice. While the “slow burn” nature of the military regime’s grave crimes has kept the spotlight away from these atrocities, it makes them no less dire. In fact, it makes it ever more urgent that we call upon the UNSC to hold the Burmese military regime to account for their war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Furthermore, the regime’s constitution, on which it predicates its upcoming elections in 2010, contains an amnesty provision that exempts all members of the military regime from prosecution. The amnesty provision is a blatant attempt to legitimize the structured and systematic violence in the country for all junta inflicted crimes. In addition to the amnesty provision, the constitution also removes any rights for civil redress for victims of crimes committed by the military and police and blocks access to justice in civilian courts thus effectively denying justice to the regime’s victims.

The world must not sit by and allow Burma’s regime to commit mass atrocities with impunity. We urge you to urgently seek support at the UNSC for a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the Burmese regime’s war crimes, crimes against humanity and system of impunity. The regime must be held accountable, on behalf of the millions of people of Burma who have no other course for redress.

Sincerely,

Dear Mr. Cannon:

A Nobel Peace Laureate and Honourary Canadian Citizen, Aung San Suu Kyi has stood for the rights and freedoms of the Burmese people under the rule of its ruthless military junta.

The unjustified trial and continued detention of Burmese democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi serves as a stark reminder of the need for workable stronger action by all governments to protect and promote democracy, human rights and freedom of expression for the people of Burma.

I call on you and the Government of Canada to actively work more with the international community in particularly United States, ASEAN, China and India to press for her immediate release from the notorious Insein Prison. Aung San Suu Kyi is one of us.

Should the junta fails to release Honourary Canadian Citizen Aung San Suu Kyi, I urge the Government of Canada to request the establishment of a commission of inquiry into crimes against humanity and war crimes committed by Senior General Than Shwe and Burmese junta with a potential indictment by the International Criminal Court in relation to the Burmese junta’s appalling human rights records, and military campaign of ethnic cleansing that the ruling State Peace and Development Council is carrying out against its own citizens for decades.

Yours truly,

Over 3,000 Karen villagers flee Burmese military to Thailand

More than 3,000 ethnic Karen have fled fighting in Burma for refuge on the Thai border, the largest such exodus since 1997, a human rights group said Sunday.

"As of Saturday, over 3,000 villagers have fled the area of Ler Per Her internally displaced persons' camp in Dta Greh township, Pa'an district to seek refuge in neighbouring Thailand," the Karen Human Rights Group (KHRG) said.

The KHRG, set up in 1992 to monitor the six-decade Burma-Karen conflict, claimed it was the biggest exodus since 1997, when the Burmese army launched a massive offensive in the Karen State and forced tens of thousands of the ethnic minority group into Thailand.

This month's influx of refugees was sparked by attacks on Karen villages by the Burmese military and their allied forces of the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA), the KHRA said.//DPA
