Statement by the President on Aung San Suu Kyi’s House Arrest and Detention

Office of the Press Secretary

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 26, 2009

Statement by the President on Aung San Suu Kyi’s House Arrest and Detention

I call on the Burmese government to release National League for Democracy Secretary General and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi from detention immediately and unconditionally. I strongly condemn her house arrest and detention, which have also been condemned around the world. The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has issued opinions affirming that the detention of Aung San Suu Kyi dating back to 2003 is arbitrary, unjustified, and in contravention of Burma’s own law, and the United Nations Security Council reaffirmed on May 22 their concern about the situation and called for the release of all political prisoners.
Aung San Suu Kyi’s continued detention, isolation, and show trial based on spurious charges cast serious doubt on the Burmese regime’s willingness to be a responsible member of the international community. This is an important opportunity for the government in Burma to demonstrate that it respects its own laws and its own people, is ready to work with the National League for Democracy and other ethnic and opposition groups, and is prepared to move toward reconciliation.
By her actions, Aung San Suu Kyi has represented profound patriotism, sacrifice, and the vision of a democratic and prosperous Burma. It is time for the Burmese government to drop all charges against Aung San Suu Kyi and unconditionally release her and her fellow political prisoners. Such an action would be an affirmative and significant step on Burma’s part to begin to restore its standing in the eyes of the United States and the world community and to move toward a better future for its people.

No body will be know that is my "Good Idea" ha ha ha!

Burma should listen to the world: FM

The Burmese military junta should respond in positive to international pleas to release opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya said yesterday.

Burma should take into consideration seriously as the international community unanimously called the immediate release of Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners for national reconciliation, he said.

It is very rare the international community from the United Nations Security Council, the United States, the European Union, the Asean and countries in East Asia took the same stance on the Burma, he said.

"Now the ball is in their court, I think Burma is thinking about the call seriously," Kasit told reporters.

PRESS RELEASE & STATEMENT - Solidarity Conference (27 May 2009) New Delhi

PRESS RELEASE

protest meeting Calls for the immediate release of Aung San Suu Kyi.
Indian Government criticized for silence on recent political events in Burma.

“The government of India (GOI) is maintaining a shameful silence on the continued incarceration of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi” according to eminent citizens at a well attended public meeting in the capital today. 27th May, 2009 is the very day that Aung San Suu Kyi should have been released from house arrest. Instead of which she is lodged at the notorious Insein Jail.

The recipient of Nobel Peace Prize (1991) and Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding (1993), Aung San Suu Kyi has been under house arrest for 13 of the last 19 years, and just prior to her last term coming to an end, the military junta arrested her on a fraudulent charge of violating the conditions of her house arrest.

Leaders and governments the world over have issued statements condemning the utterly undemocratic and inhuman treatment meted out to Aung San Suu Kyi by the Burmese Government. However, India, the largest democracy in the world and significant neighbour has chosen to remain silent.

The GOI is abdicating its responsibility to raise its voice at this critical juncture.” Said Former MP, Surendra Mohan, speaking at the meeting titled ‘Voices from India for freedom of Aung San Suu Kyi’.

Actor-Director Nandita Das added that “there is an urgency with which we need to act. From the ecology to economy to political freedoms, the destinies of India and Burma are interlinked.”

Despite his frail health, former Defence Minister and long time supporter of the Burmese cause, George Fernandes also attended the meeting. In a statement, he said, “If we are not to make a mockery of our beliefs and the highest award we conferred upon Aung San Suu Kyi more than a decade ago, we must immediately put diplomatic and public pressure to release her.”

Among the Burmese people at the meeting Dr Tint Swe, Member of Parliament, NCGUB pointed out that so far only one Indian Parliamentarian has spoken out against the arrest of Daw Suu. In a country of 1.2 billion people, many more Indians need to speak out.

Thin Thin Aung, Board member, Women’s League of Burma asserted that restoration of democracy in Burma is in India’s own political and economic interest.

Among other eminent speakers, film maker and writer, Sagari Chabbra spoke of the pervasive surveillance and repression all over Burma. G. Debaranjan, All India Forward Bloc, talked of the urgent need for political mobilization to free Daw Suu and other political prisoners, as well as for the restoration of democracy in Burma.

Former President, Samata Party, Jaya Jaitly, urged the gathering to pressurize current Parliamentarians and compel the GOI to act. She called upon Nobel Laureates from all over the world to speak out against the travesty of justice in Burma.

Film maker and political activist Amar Kanwar focused on the critical role that the media must play to raise public awareness of the horrors of what is happening in Burma.

A statement (attached), signed by over 150 organisations and individuals calling for immediate unconditional release of Daw Suu, and for the GOI to immediately break its silence was also released on the occasion.

A thank you letter from a lady

Dear Senior-General,
>
> I trust you will excuse my handwriting. I am writing by candlelight.
> It seems there is not much electricity in this part of Rangoon these
> days. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you.
> After so many years of looking out at Inya Lake, a change of scenery
> was most welcome, although I must confess I am somewhat disappointed
> with the décor and landscape gardening in my new compound. Most
> importantly though, I must thank you for your unflinching political
> support. I thought that the world had forgotten about me, but you made
> sure that my face reappeared on TV all over the world. You had
> previously cautioned foreign governments not to focus so much on one
> person (me), but now you have magnanimously ensured that my name is on
> the lips of every diplomat in Rangoon. The international community has
> a reputation for having a short attention span. Thanks to your
> efforts, Burma is back on the front pages of the newspapers. I believe
> that the US and the EU were in a bit of a pickle about how to handle
> the economic sanctions issue and recognition of next year’s election.
> Now, thanks to your clear-cut methods and no-nonsense approach, those
> countries will have no hesitation in making
> decisions with regard to the
> Burmese government’s status.
> In fact, talking of the election, on behalf of my party, the NLD, let
> me also thank you for your PR efforts on our
> behalf. With so many members in prison and so few opportunities to
> canvas for contributions, we have not been able to promote our
> democratic cause as we would like over the last few years. However, as
> you have single-handedly reminded the
> population of Burma of the differences between right and wrong,
> between truth and deceit and between justice and farce, I am sure we
> won’t need any other marketing campaigns to generate support. You have
> become the pro-democracy movement’s greatest benefactor.
> Well done! If you ever find yourself overthrown by an internal coup,
> don’t hesitate to give the NLD a call. We always need a PR agent like
> you on our books.
> And, of course, thanks for the exposure to your military justice
> system. I have been waiting a long time to see it up close and
> personal. Next time you permit reporters and diplomats in the
> courtroom, might I request that you invite the Australian ambassador?
>
> After all, with his experience in the Australian outback I am sure he
> will have a better understanding of a kangaroo court. (Lol!)
>
> At least here in Insein I should be safe from crazy intruders. You
> would think that with all the security forces and intelligence
> personnel that the government has at its disposal that it would be
> impossible for even James Bond to get past them. But I suppose if a
> secret agent disguised himself as a middle-aged, overweight,
> delusional American skinny-dipper then he would be a lot more
> difficult to catch.
> Right? Anyway, I am sure you are busy with your Naypyidaw projects,
> so I won’t take up any more of your precious time. Thank you again for
> everything you have done for our country. After the Burmese people
> have democracy, please allow us to reciprocate.
>
> Yours in captivity,
> Aung San Suu Kyi

RANGOON, BURMA – Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi marked six years in detention today as her supporters freed birds and prayed for the Nobel laureate facing a possible further five years in jail.

As Suu Kyi's closed prison trial continued for an eighth day, about 250 members of her National League for Democracy (NLD) gathered at the party's dilapidated headquarters in Rangoon.

"We call for the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners," NLD member U Ohn Kyaing told the crowd as secret police watched nearby, cameras clicking.

Suu Kyi, 63, is accused of breaking the terms of her house arrest by allowing an univited American intruder to stay for two days after he swam to her home on May 4.

She is widely expected to be found guilty by a special court in Rangoon's Insein prison, where the American John Yettaw and her two female housemates are also on trial.

A ruling could come as early as Friday, her lawyers said.

Suu Kyi has denied the charges and, in a written statement to the court on Tuesday, blamed the incident on a breach of security and noted that no officials were held accountable.

"It is a one-side measure to take legal action against me. I hereby submit that I did not commit the offence alleged by the prosecutor," she said in the statement released by her party.

The West has denounced the trial as a charade to keep the charismatic NLD leader in detention during the junta's promised 2010 election. Critics say the poll will entrench military power after nearly a half-century of rule.

Today marked the anniversary of the NLD's landslide election victory in 1990, which the generals ignored.

It also marked the sixth year of Suu Kyi's latest spell in detention. Authorities lifted her house arrest order on Tuesday, but she remains in prison while awaiting a verdict.

Suu Kyi has spent more than 13 of the past 19 years in some form of detention, mostly at her lakeside home under police guard, her phone line cut and visitors restricted.

In Washington, U.S. President Barack Obama demanded her release "immediately and unconditionally."

"Aung San Suu Kyi's continued detention, isolation, and show trial based on spurious charges cast serious doubt on the Burmese regime's willingness to be a responsible member of the international community," Obama said in a statement.

In Hanoi, Asian and European foreign ministers "called for the early release of those under detention and the lifting of restrictions placed on political parties".

Burma's generals, the latest in an unbroken line of military rulers since 1962, have ignored the outcry, or sought to defuse it by twice allowing diplomats to observe the trial.

Analysts say a guilty verdict is almost inevitable in a country where more than 2,000 political prisoners are behind bars and courts routinely bend the law to the suit the junta.

Yettaw, the 53-year-old man whose late-night swim across Inya Lake triggered the trial, was due to testify today.

The Missouri resident has said he dreamt Suu Kyi was going to be assassinated and he wanted to warn her.

Suu Kyi has denied any prior knowledge of Yettaw's plans, but said she did not alert authorities for fear he would be arrested.

"My political colleagues are serving long prison terms without any consideration or protection from the law. I allowed him to take temporary refuge in my political belief that I will not push anyone into custody," her statement said.

"It does not matter who are the intruders or whatever their motive, I just did it out of my political belief."

Yettaw, labelled a "crazy guy" by Burmese exiles, is charged with immigration violations, illegal swimming and breaking a security law that protects the state from "subversive elements."

Suu Kyi's two female housemates, Daw Khin Khin Win and Ma Win Ma Ma, will also give testimony today. They are charged under the same security law.

Suu Kyi blames Burma's military government for 'security breach'

Burma's pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi implied in a statement released Wednesday that the country's military government was to blame for a "security breach" related to an American intruder that has landed her in court.

"The fact that I am the only party being prosecuted shows the partiality of the prosecution," the Nobel Peace Prize laureate said in the statement, which was submitted to the court in Rangoon Tuesday and released by her political party Wednesday.

"This incident occurred because of a security breach (by authorities). However, until now no action has been taken on security," Suu Kyi said in the statement.

The charge against Suu Kyi of violating the terms of her house arrest stems from the visit of American John W. Yettaw, 53, earlier this month.

She pleaded not guilty last Friday to the charge, a conviction on which could lead to her being sent to prison for five years.

Yettaw of of Falcon, Mo., was arrested after he swam across a lake to warn Suu Kyi that he had had a dream that she would be assassinated.

When he first tried to visit her house in November 2008, she reported the incident to authorities through her doctor, but no action was taken, Suu Kyi said her statement.

She also intended to report the visit this month through her doctor, Tin Myo Win, but he was not allowed into her house and was later held by authorities for more than a week, the statement said.

A pale and frail-looking Suu Kyi testified in court Tuesday that she allowed Yettaw to stay temporarily because he was too weak and ill to leave immediately.

She is not expected to testify again, although she is to attend the rest of the trial. Yettaw and two women assistants who live with Suu Kyi have also pleaded not guilty to the same charge.

The trial has sparked international outrage from world leaders such as U.S. President Barack Obama, including accusations that the ruling junta is trying to keep Suu Kyi in detention during elections it has planned for next year.

The 63-year-old has already spent more than 13 of the last 19 years, including the past six, in detention without trial for her non-violent promotion of democracy in Burma, also known as Myanmar.

About 150 activists staged a peaceful demonstration in front of the Burmese Embassy in Phnom Pen, Cambodia, on Wednesday and a similar rally was held in Bangkok.

Obama urges Myanmar to release Aung Sang Suu Kyi

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Obama called Tuesday for the immediate and unconditional release of Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who is on trial for subversion.

Obama said the Nobel Peace Prize winner's detention is "arbitrary" and "unjustified" in accordance with the findings of a United Nations group looking into the matter.

"I strongly condemn her house arrest and detention, which have also been condemned around the world," Obama said in a statement.

"Aung San Suu Kyi's continued detention, isolation and show trial, based on spurious charges, cast serious doubt on the Burmese regime's willingness to be a responsible member of the international community," he said. "This is an important opportunity for the government in Burma to demonstrate that it respects its own laws and its own people."

Myanmar's military junta, which has ruled the country since 1962, changed the English translation of the country's name from Burma in 1989, but several governments, including the United States, still use the older name.

Suu Kyi's U.S.-based lawyer, Jared Genser, said he was pleased the president weighed in so strongly.

Genser said sustained U.S. engagement is vital to keep the international community engaged on the "threat to international peace and security posed by the ongoing actions of the Burmese junta."

At a prison compound in Yangon, the Myanmar capital, Suu Kyi, 63, took the stand for the first time Tuesday and told a Myanmar court that she did not violate her house arrest when she offered temporary shelter to an American man who swam to her lakeside home.

"She was very confident, very firm, very clear," said Mark Canning, the British ambassador to Myanmar, who was among diplomats and journalists allowed to watch the proceedings.

"In a strange way, she commanded the courtroom," he said.

Suu Kyi, who is being tried on subversion charges, said she did not learn immediately that John William Yettaw swam nearly two miles and snuck into her crumbling, colonial-era bungalow on May 3.

She was told about the visitor the next day by one of two housekeepers who are her sole companions in the heavily guarded residence, where she was under house arrest.

Suu Kyi's two helpers are also on trial, as is Yettaw. Yettaw left her home late May 5, she said.

"He walked to the lakeside. But I don't know which way he went, because it was very dark," Suu Kyi said.

The Nobel laureate also acknowledged that Yettaw, a 53-year-old former military serviceman from Falcon, Missouri, visited her once before last November.

"Did you report to the authority about his arrival?" the judge asked.

"No," she replied.

Suu Kyi had earlier told supporters that she did not tell authorities about the latest intrusion because she didn't want Yettaw or anyone else to get in trouble.

But it is her silence for which the Myanmar's military junta is trying her. The government said Yettaw's presence violated conditions of Suu Kyi's house arrest. If convicted, she could be sentenced to three to five years in prison. Suu Kyi has been held under house arrest since 1989.

The country's regime rarely allows Suu Kyi any visitors, and foreigners are not allowed overnight stays in local households without government permission.

Suu Kyi has been under house arrest for 13 of the past 19 years -- a confinement the military junta has regularly extended.

Her latest round of home detention, after five years of confinement, expires Wednesday, according to her supporters at home and abroad. The Nobel laureate has been the face of Myanmar's pro-democracy movement and the focus of a global campaign to free her.

Though the government said it considered releasing her at the end of the term, it said it had no choice but to try her after she met with Yettaw.

Obama called Suu Kyi a patriot who has sacrificed much for democracy. Her release, he said, would give the Myanmar government an opportunity to restore its global standing.

Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy party won an overwhelming victory in 1990 in the first free elections in the country in nearly 30 years. But the military junta refused to step down and annulled the election results.

North Korea test-fires two more missiles

North Korea test-fires two more missiles
Updated Tue. May. 26 2009 9:48 AM ET

CTV.ca News Staff

North Korea test-launched two more short-range missiles Tuesday, a day after stunning the world with news it had detonated a nuclear bomb underground.

Pyongyang carried out the tests despite the threat of retaliatory action from the United Nations Security Council.

According to the Yonhap news agency in South Korea, the regime tested a ground-to-air and ground-to-ship missile from a launch pad on the east coast of the politically isolated nation.

The missiles reportedly have a range of about 130 kilometres.

The regime is also warning ships to avoid the waters off its western coast this week, a sign that more missiles tests are likely.

Susan Rice, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said North Korea is trying to see whether they can intimidate the international community.

"But we are united, North Korea is isolated and pressure on North Korea will increase," Rice said.

On Monday, North Korea's official news agency confirmed that the country had "successfully conducted one more underground nuclear test on May 25 as part of measures to bolster its nuclear deterrent for self-defence."

The test, North Korea's second-ever, took place near the northeastern town of Kilju. North Korea staged its first nuclear test in October 2006.

Later on Monday, the nation reportedly test fired three short-range ground-to-air missiles.

Paul Heinbecker, a former Canadian ambassador to the UUN, said "not every problem has a solution" and that there is no quick fix to the tension in Northeast Asia.

He pointed out that North Korea has a massive army of more than one million people that poses a grave threat to its closest neighbour, South Korea.

"This is a very tough military situation," Heinbecker told CTV's Canada AM.

"The only thing I think that can be done is to try and contain them and make it more and more difficult for them to export materials that could fuel their nuclear program and to import equipment that they might need."

However, he acknowledged that such measures are already written into existing UN resolutions against Pyongyang, and seem to have had little effect so far.

U.S. President Barack Obama took a strong stance against the tests on Monday, saying they went against Pyongyang's own de-armament commitments.

He said the United States and the international community must "take action" in response.

France is calling for new sanctions against North Korea while Japan is backing U.S. calls for strong action against the regime.

China said it "resolutely opposed" North Korea's nuclear test.

ASEM to call for Aung San Suu Kyi release: draft statement‏

Asia, Europe to call for Aung San Suu Kyi release: draft statement 25
May 2009, 18:21 CET - filed under: Myanmar (HANOI) - Asian and European
ministers are to jointly call for the release of Myanmar opposition
democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, a draft statement seen by AFP on
Monday said.

"In light of the concern about the recent development to Daw Aung San
Suu Kyi, ministers... called for the early release of those under
detention and the lifting of restriction placed on political parties,"
said the draft statement. It was prepared for the Asia-Europe (ASEM)
Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Hanoi which ends Tuesday.

Aung San Suu Kyi is on trial in military-ruled Myanmar where she faces
up to five years in jail on charges of violating her house arrest after
an incident in which an American man swam to her house.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner has been in detention for 13 of the past
19 years since her National League for Democracy party won a landslide
victory in 1990 polls but was not allowed to take power.

ASEM's draft statement called on Myanmar to conduct elections planned
for next year "in a free and fair manner" and said the future of
Myanmar lay "in the hands of its people".

Myanmar was expected to come up for discussion at the ASEM meeting
Monday night during a working dinner, delegates said.

Earlier, asked whether ASEM would make a statement about Myanmar,
Indonesian Foreign Minister Hassan Wirayuda had told AFP that "one
paragraph" in the planned statement was "the result of lots of
consultations between Asian (countries), Europeans and with Myanmar as
a direct partner."

Also earlier, Surin Pitsuwan, secretary general of the Association of
Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), had said there were "some discussions
going on" at the Asia-Europe meeting over Myanmar.

In a rare move, ASEAN last week issued an expression of "grave concern"
over the treatment of Aung San Suu Kyi.

Myanmar's Southeast Asian neighbours traditionally prefer not to be
seen as intervening in the affairs of their members.

On Monday Myanmar's junta accused neighbouring Thailand, which issued
the ASEAN statement in its capacity as the bloc's chairman, of meddling
in Myanmar's domestic politics, state media reported.

Asked for his reaction, Surin said: "I think you cannot deny that there
is a rather strong sense of anxiety and that's something that ASEAN
will have to find a way to address."

Myanmar belongs to the 10-member ASEAN bloc, as well as to ASEM.

Free Burma's political prisoners now!

FREE BURMA’S POLITICAL PRISONERS NOW!
1
Press Release
Embargoed until 01.00am Thailand time Tuesday 26 May
[Bangkok, Thailand] 26 May 2009
Accept nothing less than the release of Burma's political prisoners:
Over 600,000 global citizens urge Ban Ki-moon
A global campaign for the release of Burma’s political prisoners has secured over 600,000
petition signatures in just ten weeks, according to campaign organisers. Signatures have
come from over 150 countries. "This is the largest global coordinated action for Burma
the world has ever witnessed," said Dr Naing Aung, Secretary-General of the Forum for
Democracy in Burma.
The petition calls on the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to make it his personal
priority to secure the release of all political prisoners in Burma, as the essential first step
towards democratization in the country. It comes at a time when Ban Ki-moon is
negotiating a visit to the country with the ruling military government, and has said he is
"deeply concerned" about Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s detention. The closed-door trial of
the Nobel Peace Prize winner and leader of the National League for Democracy is today
entering its seventh day. International condemnation of the trial has been widespread,
including unprecedented criticism from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations
(ASEAN). Since October last year, more than 350 of Burma’s 2,100 political prisoners
have been sentenced in similar trials, to harsh sentences of up to 104 years.
Co-founder and Joint-Secretary of the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners
(Burma) Bo Kyi said, “The eyes of the world are on Ban Ki-moon now. He must do
whatever it takes, and accept nothing less than the immediate and unconditional release
of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners. Without their release, there can be
no national reconciliation in Burma."
The campaign has been led by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (Burma)
and Forum for Democracy in Burma, representing former political prisoners and prodemocracy
activists. A broad-based consortium of Burma exile and solidarity groups
around the world has worked to secure the signatures, including Avaaz, a massive online
community of activists.
FREE BURMA’S POLITICAL PRISONERS NOW!
2
Avaaz Executive Director Ricken Patel said, "Aung San Suu Kyi is Burma's Nelson
Mandela. The UN Secretary-General must insist that her release be the condition for any
further international engagement with the Burmese junta."
Since the campaign launched on 13 March, Burma's Human Rights Day, one person has
signed the petition every 10 seconds.
