Dear Secretary-General,

I urgently call on you to immediately intervene to secure pro-Democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s release from Insein Prison, Yangon.
As you are likely to be aware she is currently detained in the maximum-security jail and is, along with other prisoners of conscience and political prisoners there, at risk of torture and ill treatment.
I am deeply concerned for Ms Suu Kyi’s safety and health - she suffers from low blood pressure and dehydration. Conditions in Myanmar prisons are appalling and will further jeopardise her health. Her regular doctor Tin Myo Win was denied access to her on 7 May. Following that attempted visit he was taken away by security officers and has not been seen since.Ms Suu Kyi faces trial on Monday 18 May on what appears to be trumped up charges coinciding with the expiry of her home-detention at the end of this month. She has been detained for 13 of the past 19 years, mostly under house arrest, during which period the Myanmar government has continued to act in utter disregard for the human rights of most of its people.A unified voice is needed to stop the Myanmar government from acting with impunity and to prevent this desperate situation from deteriorating further.
Please urgently raise the above concerns with the authorities in Myanmar and demand that on her release Ms Suu Kyi is not returned to house arrest. Additionally, I ask you to call on the UN Security Council to make the same demand.

Yours sincerely,

(Your name)
