Saw Flu update in Canada

To date, there are only a handful of confirmed cases of swine flu in Canada. The Public Health Agency of Canada, The Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and the ministries of health in other provinces and territories are monitoring the current situation carefully.
If you have recently traveled to Mexico or, have been in close contact with someone who has recently returned from Mexico and are experiencing flu-like symptoms, please contact your doctor immediately.
As you will recall, during the outbreak of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in 2003, I communicated important health information to you, my constituents, on my website and by other means. Now, as then, I believe it is very important for all of us to be fully informed with respect to health emergencies.
In order to be aware of the symptoms of swine influenza (flu) and to take necessary health precautions, please carefully read the following:
Symptoms may include:
- Headache;
- Chills and cough followed by fever;
- Loss of appetite;
- Muscle aches and fatigue;
- Runny nose;
- Sneezing;
- Watery eyes;
- Throat irritation;
- Nausea;
- Vomiting; and,
- Diarrhea.
Health precautions to take include:
- Frequent hand washing with soap under warm running water - alcohol-based hand gels can also be used if soap and water are not readily available;
- Cough or sneeze into your sleeve to prevent the spread of air borne germs;
- Try to avoid close contact with sick people to reduce the spread of germs; and,
- If you develop flu-like symptoms stay home. DO NOT go to school or work. Stay home and IMMEDIATELY contact your doctor or call Telehealth Ontario at 1-8....
The Public Health Agency of Canada has set up a Public Health Information Line which is operational between 8:00am to 8:00pm at 1-800-454-8302.
** Please note that swine flu cannot be contracted by eating pork. Remember, to make sure that pork is thoroughly cooked and is not pink in the middle. Use a food thermometer to make sure pork has been heated through to 71 degrees Celsius (160 degrees Fahrenheit). **
