Action from Washington DC

ANTI-DICTATORSHIP PEOPLES’ FREEDOM MOVEMENT IN BURMA

Letter of Invitation

The battle of political defiance No.437 "Anti- Dictatorship, People's Freedom Movement" will continue and as scheduled below.

The United States decided last week to support the creation of “Commission of Inquiry” on Burma’s military leaders for crime against humanity and war crimes citing gross human rights violations against ethnic minorities and unjust and unfair restrictions on coming elections slated for November 7th engineered to continue the generals’ rule.

The dilemma today is whether to express outrage – increasing sanctions, setting up more war crime tribunals, imposing arms embargos etc. – or wait and hope for a possible eventual change – political liberalization, increased human rights, regime change etc. - in the wake of a new administration.

US hope to further its strategic and humanitarian aims in that military ruled country is much in question given the fact 25% of the seats reserved for the military and NLD banned from the political process not to mention Daw Aung San Suu Kyi out of the political picture as well.

And the military drawn constitution guaranteeing the military to remain in command even after the elections in the country and the region no less and the generals’ immunity cited to preempt them from persecution for all acts committed in their official capacities reinforced the fact no doubt.

Hence, only imposing stricter sanctions and forming more commissions of inquiry and others would bring the military regime to heel and engage in dialogues for democratization process of the country no less.

Hence, we call on the US determined will and committed action in this matter in order to lessen the military’s grip on the people of Burma and in turn help US meeting its strategic and humanitarian aims in that military ruled country and region as well..

In case we are concerned for the prosperity and posterity of the people in Burma and US national interests in the region as well it is best to prevent the elections from taking place on due date and thus preempt the advent of a ruling body to promote further military rule in Burma.
