FOR THE LEADERS WHO ARE SECOND IN POSITIONS
( MY SECOND OPEN LETTER TO 88 GENERATION)
To all,
According to John C. Maxwell, a consultant, in “How Successful People
Lead”, he defines that leadership as a process, not a position. It’s
straightforward, so anyone can learn easily. He portrays leadership in
term of five levels.
(1) Position
People follow you because they have to.
This is the entry level, where your influence comes from the job title.
The title grants certain right, which is fine, but it’s wrong for you
to use that position to get people to follow you. It’s level one, may be
bosses. They rely on rules, regulations, policies, and company or
organizational charts to control their people. Their people will only
follow them within the stated boundaries of their authority.
(2) Permission
People follow you because they want to.
This is a second level, where you should be headed from level one,
building leadership, with people following you because they want to. To
do that, try to now your people and figure out how to get along with
them. The main important thing is treat others as you would like to be
treated.
(3) Production
People follow you because of what you have done for the organization.
It’s a third level, to be a good leader, you must get things done. When
that happens, morale improves, and targets are hit, you become one. As
you become a third level leader, you can take your people to another
level. A key to being effective at this level is understanding how you
and your people abilities can be used productively to further the vision
of the organization – and also connecting others to that vision, though
your communication.
(4) People development
People follow you because of what you have done for them.
In this level, leaders become great not because of their power but
because of their ability to empower others. You now use your position,
relationships, and productivity to invest in your followers and develop
them until they become leaders in their own right and role. To succeed
at this level you must recruit the best people possible, and place
everyone in the right positions, helping them to build on their
strengths and equipping them with the resources to do their job well.
You must also model good leadership or otherwise your people will behave
in ways that you don’t want.
(5) Pinnacle
People follow you because of who you are and what you represent.
The highest and most difficult level of leadership is not available to
all. We must understand it. While most people can climb as high as level
4, to hit the top level 5, require not only effort, skill and intention
but also a high level of talent. Only about 1 per cent of leaders reach
this level, where they are focused on developing leaders, not gaining
followers or doing work. To accomplish this, you must develop a
leadership culture, training and coaching others.
